In this article, I show you 3 ways that I use to determine if you’re an INFJ, using my four-fold method of voice, visual, and life-based typing.
1. “INFJ or not” voice-based typing.
I use voice when I talk to people on the phone. This all started when I was consulting with clients and they would often say I’m INFJ and I would either agree, or know they weren’t an INFJ. That’s how that started with typing people from consulting voice-based sessions.
If I didn’t think they were INFJ, I found that in 90% of cases, I thought they were either INFP or ENFJ.
So, that’s the starting point for that: INFJ or not.
What’s your voice sound like?
I can tell volumes about a person in the first few seconds of talking to them on a phone where their voice is the only cue I have to go off.
Briefly, I can tell INFPs often by tone of voice because it’s phlegmatic. INFJ men often have a more monotonic/cerebral tone because of Ti. ENFJ’s voices are often more excitable and enthusiastic.
The tertiary function is often responsible for how a type’s voice sounds.
INFJ Vocal tone
INFJ women’s voices often have more extraverted feeling tone. INFJ men tend to be more reserved and taciturn, and lacking in extraverted feeling. Their vocal tone tends towards depth and seriousness and their conversation is on-point with getting to the heart of what they want to talk about. INFJ men seem “torn off” from the world around them when talking.
INFP Vocal tone
INFP women’s voices are always a dead giveaway. It’s sorta like this airy floaty tone, opposite of focused. There is a characteristic Ne animated voice, that alternates with Si hum-drum vocal tone. Their Ne outlook transmits this fun feeling, but it doesn’t resolve to any straight-line, linear action, which is quite the contrary when I talk to INFJ and ENFJ.
There is also a vocabulary selection thing going on with a bias towards using words like “hamper” which is a dead giveaway I’m talking to an INFP woman. Si language. It’s like a wet blanket vocabulary.
The way I type is similar to countertransference in psychoanalysis. It’s what I feel when I hear this type’s voice, which is recurrent and predictable.
2. Visual typing
Visual typing is a lot more accurate, especially if I can see a person on a video, like famous people where there’s a lot of that info. It becomes reductionist with enough footage.
Sometimes people ask me to type them from photos. I ask for a range of photos from different time periods, and different angles, and preferably not selfies, but candid photos taken by someone else.
My typing service includes voice-based, life-based, and visual all combined to ensure the highest accuracy.
Famous examples of visual typing method applied
INFP women tend to look like anime. Think of large liquid eyes that are squinty. A lot of French girls that dress like a cross between an old maid and a hipster, and wear old school glasses, those are likely to be INFP women. Could be INTPs too, it’s like an Ne-Si thing, with some Ni id mixed in.
INFJs don’t dress like that. Both INFJ and ENFJ would be more likely to dress in a classical way, or simple way, but not that sort of advertising that “I’m a geek” way. Neither INFJ nor ENFJ are geeks. INFPs are close to ENFP in the hippie style. But INFPs are more plain in comparison. Many INFPs want to recede into the background as if saying “Don’t pay any attention to me whatsoever, I don’t want to be seen”
INFPs look like deer. Big eyes and harmless innocent anime liquid expression. INFP style and appearance runs the gamut kinda between Ne flamboyance and Si invisibility (with Fi dominance).
INFJs are cool. They’re slick. They’re streamlined, sorta cat-like, but not as exotic or catlike as ENFJs. So, similar to INFP in comparison to ENFP. A toned-down version of ENFJ, but other than that there are a lot of similarities and shared values to ENFJ. Physiologically, I would say ENFJs are slimmer and more plastic and mobile in movement and features, which is Ni auxiliary look: thin.
INFJ men can have little Fe and end up looking more introverted thinking. They have that professor, intellectual thing that you see in people like Christoph Waltz, Jeremey Irons, Nick Cave and Jordan Peterson.
INFJs tend towards average and regular facial features, what I would call “reasonable” facial features, not tending towards florid and exotic extremes like you’d see in extraverts in general, but ENFJs, ESFPs, ENFPs, extraverts with feeling function. People like Richard Gere, Roger Waters, Jeff Bridges, Natalie Portman, Kate Winslet, Alanis Morrisette, Fiona Apple are some INFJ examples.
INFPs can be more exotic or more plain and fuddy-duddy than INFJ. I’d say Fi in the dom or aux causes exoticness more than if it is not.

3. Life-based typing
a. Career orientation, career metabolism. There’s an inescapable physical/physiological component to it. What are you capable of doing in careers?
INFJs typically have problems with money and career.
INFJ men are focused on some philosophical or aesthetic thing and get hung up on expressing the truth of that through some form of expression. Highly intellectual, or pseudo-intellectual pursuits and ways of expressing themselves. Not talking to people. Getting lost in their own dialectic and internal dialogue about something, without any external feedback or consequences.
INFJ men are ambitious. They want to make a big impact. However, it’s basically them alone in a bedroom with all their grandiose thoughts with very little real world feedback to correct them.
INFP have career problems, but they typically have jobs because of their security mindset issuing forth from Si tertiary. They don’t tend to be ambitious in the external world. They have a middle-class mentality.
INFP women I have spoken to often work in accounting or something similar, in a corporate structure. Human resources. Teachers. Their problem is bringing themselves to bear on their environment in an effective and impactful way that makes people respect them and not fall through the cracks in the inescapable office politics of the corporate environments they work in. This is usually their main problem.
They also report that they most enjoy TRAVELING and LEARNING when given life-history inventories.
b. Relationship-orientation, relationship metabolism. What are your patterns in relationships?
INFJ, INFP, and ENFJ all have strikingly different relationship patterns.
INFP women tend to be codependent and other-focused in a naive, enabling way. They are good at keeping track of the whole history of a relationship. a led to b led to c and this is the summation of where we are at with this other person that I’m in a relationship with, or want to be, or think I am, but really am not.
INFJ people tend to be self-focused loners that have big romantic aspirations that are unrealistic in orientation, usually because they are obsessed with an ideal of someone rather than the actuality of them. See a connection to their career outlooks? This leads them to act like assholes with people they are with because their chosen muse falls off the pedestal, The INFJ pines for an unattainable ideal.
Quite contrary to INFJ or ENFJ, INFP are much more concerned with the reality of actual people. They are much more tolerant, maybe too much so. INFPs are also more focused on nuts-and-bolts of how we can be together in a real sense. Their problem in relationships is they’re too nice.
INFJs can think they are nice. But there is always some Fi id thing going on that they aren’t aware of, and it leads them to alternate in extremes of relating. Either all on, or completely divorced and seeking somewhere else. In the long-run, they tend to ignore their partners.
INFPs being Fi dominant will define themselves off a relationship. Relationships and relating are their life blood. This is true with non-romantic relationships as well. They just place more value on relationships.
INFJs main problem in relationships is that they are inherently self-mating, and just generally obsessed with themselves. Non-relational focus.
Then the soulmate! Where are they?? Then INFJ switches to the other extreme of over-relating romantically (Se is present often too).
INFPs by comparison are like hobbits. They have their workaday world, they cannot tolerate the insecurity that an INFJ on average would subject themselves to: long bouts of loneliness and isolation.
INFP would find all this quite unsettling. INFP is relatively settled and security-minded; retiring. Their relational metabolism is more even and hum-drum by comparison, neither great highs or lows. But a more constant relationship focus. They know their people. They keep tabs on them. And they can recount them in a Te (Si) sort of way. Like x did this, then I did this, then y came into the equation and said this. It’s sorta like a soap opera or a vignette of life.
INFJs are not hard-working, except selfishly for their own glorification. INFP women are hard-working good people that are taken advantage of in the workplace and relationships.
ENFJs have relational focus but it’s more like a blend between INFJ and INFP. And they are high-octane, they can process people very fast. And jobs and careers. They are FAST. They are EXECUTIVE. They can make shit happen, get shit done. They share the same romantic orientation as INFJ and INFP…in the sense that romance is one of the most important motivations in their lives. All of NF share a relationship-orientation that is in sharp departure from all other classes of types: NT, SP, SJ.
ENFJs have their shit together so it’s easy to pick them out from INFJ and INFP.
What are ENFJ problems?
Settling on one person, being hypergamous, getting bored and looking for another person either in or out of a relationship. I would say ENFJs are the most prone to cheating on their spouses or partners, or just looking elsewhere for some new novelty or fling. Hard to be satisfied in a settled relationship. Quite the opposite of INFP in this way. No moral compunction or radar. No Fi.
Being scattered. Ne id. Hyperactivity. High-octane drive to blow through careers and people like fluff. Sorta a similar problem to ENTPs. Some of them. Ne problem. But in ENFJs case it is emotionally driven and subconscious, hard to get out or see that they are like that, to themselves.
I actually think developing self-awareness is the key to this. Ni aux.
ENFJs are generally popular and well-liked, or can easily find people or groups that like them. Charismatic.
Like the dude I was consulting with who was running three businesses, drove a Mercedes through Africa, then ended up in the jungle somewhere and started doing deep-sea diving and then wanted to be the 1st in his country for accomplishing the deepest dive, which he did. But it’s this scattered unpleasant emotional energy. I notice they respond well to reflection and psychoanalytical type thing. I think that centers them, gives them insight slowly, which they need to ground. Ni. Nothing else seems to do it. Fi doesn’t really. Insight into their actions and things they have done. Why did they do it? Because they often have done a shit-ton of things compared to Se deficient INFJ and INFP. That’s how I pull them apart.

Want to know your true MBTI type?
Even though INFJ, INFP, and ENFJ are the most common types I deal with on Stellar Maze, I’m capable of identifying all MBTI types.
Knowing your Myers-Briggs type is indispensable if you want to be successful in careers and relationships. Conversely, being mistyped can lead you down paths that go nowhere.
My method is the most accurate way of identifying your MBTI type. This method doesn’t rely on self-reporting or one-dimensional metrics of assessment. It relies on objectivity, things that you can’t hide.
To request to be typed using my three-fold method, contact me at blake@stellarmaze.com and put I WANT TYPE in header of email to get started, if you dare 😉

Another great article.
ENFJs are the most fascinating type from my perspective. They tend to embody so many facets that aren’t found in any other type. That being said someone like Taylor Swift appears as air to me, so there are exceptions of course. I guess I like the more dark, brooding and even Machiavellian examples. The Fe/Ni axis is pure magic especially when it has hints of the devil.
I’m wondering what attracts ENFFs to INFPs but not so much to INFJs? I know it’s a stereotype but from my experience I’ve also seen the connection firsthand. Perhaps it’s the more steady drip of Fi that lends itself to INFPs being more comfortable/confident in their reserved nature? Whereas INFJs are more capricious and not as settled, as if Fi/Fe is constantly pulling them to opposite ends of the spectrum. Don’t know, just some random thoughts…
“ENFJs are the most fascinating type from my perspective. They tend to embody so many facets that aren’t found in any other type.”
Do you have an example of famous ENFJs when you say that? I’d be curious to see who you have in mind.
“I guess I like the more dark, brooding and even Machiavellian examples.”
That sounds like Plutonian to me. https://www.stellarmaze.com/the-plutonian-infj/
“I’m wondering what attracts ENFFs to INFPs but not so much to INFJs?”
I know that in Socionics ENFJ+INFP (and similarly INFJ+ENFP) are supposed to be the most compatible, but personally I have failed to see ANY example of these combos and on closer look, there’s always some mistyping going on. I would love to hear some examples though! I would go on to argue that these intertype relationships are actually among the LEAST compatible within the NF class.
Interesting thoughts. You’re attracted to ENFJs. I have a good old friend who is an INFP female and who loves them. Asked who she’d like to be if she could choose her type, she says ENFJ.
I have a problem with ENFJs, I cannot spend too long in their company. I was wooed by ENFJ males a couple of times and I just inwardly kind of want to roll my eyes at them. Too intense – too much all about them. Not enough quirk, not enough left field. I love me and ENTP – it’s such a natural connection, lots of interest and 9/10 lots of laughs!
I wish I could be an ENTP!
Would you put Cher as an ENFJ?
No…
Hmmm…would you disagree that’s she’s an Fe dom? If she’s not a ExFJ I’m out of guess lol
What’s so Fe about Cher? Not seeing it.
@Stardust
Hmmm, actually when it comes to on-screen examples of ENFJs I’m not sure that the effect I’m speaking of is great, but to give a sinister example I’d point to Ted Bundy – there’s an evil wrapped in playfulness that intrigues me. He literally gyrates the two extremes simultaneously. I see it in many ENFJs though not to that extent (I’m not saying ENFJs are evil haha). In person it’s a magic that I’ve never experienced with any other type – INFJs would be capable of it too but it’s only on rare occasions that they’d have the confidence to display it. INFJs are usually caught up in a hundred head fuc@s and that smothers them/their magic.
As for pairings my comment in hindsight was overblown – I had a date with an ENFJ girl who ate me alive (I was completely overwhelmed) and she was obsessed with Adrian Brody and the movie “The Pianist” which I see as an INFP movie and actor (though that’s debatable).
In my experience ENFP/INFJ works well but it’s probably because it’s “easy” for the INFJ – ENFPs tend to bring out the lighter side of an INFJ and the relationship sorta just goes along without the mud that INFJs usually find themselves in. Personally I think INFJs will struggle with any type as a whole though.
this is so fascinating – would you possibly do an article going into your thoughts on this kind of typing for INTJ as well?
I’m not likely to do an article on this in the near future, but if you have any specific questions, I’ll be glad to try to answer them. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks Blake! What do you think INTJ struggles with most? How do you differentiate an INTJ from an INTP?
I think INTJ struggles the most with not getting their car factory burnt to the ground because they support a President that seems to be in disfavor with the liberal masses.
Other than that, I think they struggle most with intimate relationships.
How do you differentiate an INTJ from an INTP?
INTP is the computer and INTJ is the scientist that’s best at programming it.
@Blake StellarMaze
I guess it’s like the Rashomon Effect – we all see things differently! Makes you think is MBTI real? Is anything real?
I’m not sure how to put it in words… my “typing” method is primitive/under construction – purely based on Cher’s looks, who from my grainy perspective, is “dripping” with Fe. And then on further consideration, she seems like someone who could sum you up quickly before eviscerating you with Ni/Ti. She has an intimidating air. That’s the gist of it from what I see (but it’s one of those things that you can get lost in the trees with no way of getting back which may be the case here)
On this note, can I ask do you see Fe in all the ENFJ women you type? I ask because it could make for an interesting subject for an article should you get the wish. For example you’ve typed Sharon Stone as an ENFJ from memory, do you see bags of Fe in her? Same for the Hunger Games girl…personally I agree they are ENFJs but I see next to no Fe in either of them as if to contradict myself. The same goes for the ENFJ 8’s that you’ve compiled (and helped me to see the differences within types).
Blake, how come ENFP’s do not come to you for advice, I’m sure a lot of them think they are INFJ?
Another thing, could you tell something about INFP guys like what they struggle with, what they look like? You write a lot about INFP women so I cannot truly tell if a guy is INFP or INFJ or ISFP for example.
Thanks in advance
Blake, how come ENFP’s do not come to you for advice, I’m sure a lot of them think they are INFJ?
Well, the ones that think they are INFJ come to me, sometimes. And sometimes, even the ones that think they are ENFP come to me, but they are the least likely of all the NF types to work with me. I think the reason for this is because they are extraverts, and unlike ENFJ, not into Ni, and as such repelled by some of my “reductionist” insights into type.
Another thing, could you tell something about INFP guys like what they struggle with, what they look like?
1. Toby Maguire
2. Topher Grace
3. Elijah Wood
4. Patrick J. Adams
I think INFP men struggle with being too nice and boy-like such they are not taken seriously in an Se context.
On this note, can I ask do you see Fe in all the ENFJ women you type?
So you know what happens is that I establish what I call A CONTINUUM for each of the 16 Myers-Briggs types. Much of the continuum is based on VISUAL TYPING.
For example you’ve typed Sharon Stone as an ENFJ from memory, do you see bags of Fe in her?
What I have found recently is that many of the previous famous people, particularly women, that I had typed as what I call TYPE 3 ENFJ, are likely to be ESFP, and maybe ISFP. Sharon Stone is a crossover case in this regard. She may be xSFP, which would mean she is using Se and Fi mostly rather than Fe and Ni, and now that I’m thinking about it, this is highly likely. So, to answer your question I do not see bags of Fe in her. I see more the resting bitch face I associate with ESFP or ISFP.
The same goes for the ENFJ 8’s that you’ve compiled (and helped me to see the differences within types).
The same thing that happened recently for the TYPE 3 ENFJ also happened for what I call the TYPE 8 ENFJ, except in the case of the type 8 ENFJ, in addition to many of them being reassigned to ESFP (Plutonian ESFP: Elvis, for example), others like Marlon Brando and Al Pacino were reassigned to Plutonian INFJ. In essence, TYPE 8 had just became synonymous with Pluto for me, more specifically a Plutonian type that has Se or Ni dominance with the FEELING function.
Thanks for the answer Blake.
Another question I have is what does a woman need to be like in order to attract and keep an INFJ guy? What personality type and what should she do in order to make it work? You mentioned here that those guys get bored and tend to ignore their partners in the long run. So, how to prevent that and what do?
I’m of the mind that INFJ men do best with other NF types for long-term relationships. I think many INFJ men are attracted by Se type women. Also, Ne.
In essence, I think INFJ men are most attracted to ESFP and ENFP women: Extraverted Perceiving dominant types with feeling function. This falls in line with the traditional MBTI wisdom on intertype compatibility, but also combined with Socionics intertype compatibility.
However, while an INFJ man may be attracted to an ESFP woman, it’s a poor bet for a long-term relationship. An INFJ will get bored intellectually with this type of woman, which brings me to how to KEEP an INFJ guy: good conversation.
I would say the most ideal mate for an INFJ, and the most typical from my experience, is the ENFJ woman. For marriage, I would say this is ideal.
For the deepest soul resonance (soul mates), I would say INFP female is best long-term fit in this regard.
ENFP female is sort of in the middle between these extremes. There is good initial attraction, good longevity, good marriage potential, good soul resonance.
ENFJ female is more on the marriage compatibility side and not so much soul resonance, kinda like really good buddies with good sexual attraction that tends to last.
INFP female is more on the soulmate compatibility spectrum, which means they might not get along in the day-to-day life and be a good team in the way that ENFJ female is, but on the other hand, the roots run deep here, and the INFP female can touch the INFJ male in a way that no other type can.
@blakestellarmaze
Very unexpected that you would mention INFP here, wouldn’t INFP woman be a victim of the INFJ male in a relationship?
Seems like exactly the type of woman he would take for granted and start to ignore. Lack of Se attraction and then love for Si, plus I never thought INFJ males would respect a timid and meek woman? Also, can they even have meaningful conversations when INFP is horrified by any darkness and just hopes the guy is a prince Charming deep down which he isn’t?
I feel like INFJ males love a mommy type that has her shit together or a dominatrix, so ENFJ sounds right
I don’t know how someone can be a “soulmate” long term, is that like a delusion, a limerence?
I decided to create an article to answer your question because it merited it: How to attract and keep an INFJ male?
@KE
Thanks for the comment.
I could very much be an INFP like your friend. So too would I choose to be an ENFJ haha.
Totally understand your thoughts. ENFJ’s can be extremely self-focused, but at the same time, they are naturally empathic and tend to bring everyone together, which for a lonesome INFJ feels good. I don’t know, part of the appeal for me is the contrast however between their good and bad side. They are capable of horrendous acts but also the most loving gestures. To be sure I’m not speaking so much of a romantic relationship, although as a male I’m highly attracted to female ENFJ’s. But it would be a relationship where I would find myself outclassed and likely decapitated. I assume the pairing would be more even if the sexes were reversed. I’m perplexed why ENFJ females like INFPs but not INFJs (generally speaking).
It’s their magic I like most, the Fe Ni axis. Also their inner workings, which for someone who has the same cognitive functions only in slightly different order, provides a neat insight into human psychology; the dark traits of ENFJs are completely exposed and understood by INFJs which is quite a rare phenomenon considering that ENFJs tend to be master manipulators. INFJs are perhaps the only type capable of seeing this so easily, thanks to the familiarity of the functions (Fe Ni). I like watching ENFJs think that they have pulled the wool over my eyes when all the while I spotted their tactics before they even begun 🙂
I haven’t met many ENTPs. The ones I have met tended to be more harder edged and logic based (of course with the customary antics you like). I guess I missed the more caring side, the side that reveres nature and animals and their welfare. How do you balance this? Do you not miss that more warm side? I get the laughing…I’m a bit too bitter now though to be swayed by it. In truth I don’t think anyone would take my fancy ATM, ENFJ or otherwise.
